Vakhtang Beridze's (1914, Kutaisi – 2000, Tbilisi) album of caricatures, From the History of the Institute, created in 1941-1942 is a unique document that has not been published and has thus remained unknown to the general public. The album playfully depicts Giorgi Chubinashvili Institute of History in the 40's. The institute was founded in Tbilisi, in 1941. From the start, the Institute represented the principal centre for research in Georgian Art History.
In 1936 Beridze graduated from the Transcaucasian Institute of Industry, Department of Architecture. From 1941 he was a staff member of the G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art. He became director of the same institute in 1973 and served as such until 1988 and then from 1996 to 2000. From 1988 to 1996 he served as Honorary Director, Member of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia and Honored Scientist of Georgia.
Beridze’s research was mainly focused on the history of Georgian architecture. Of crucial significance are his fundamental monographs on the 12th-14th century churches in Samtskhe, 16th and 17th century ecclesiastical architecture, the architecture of Tbilisi from 1801 to 1917, and Georgian architecture of the 1920s and 30s, all of which defined the general direction for the scientific research of these historical periods.
The project was initiated by Gallery Nectar and a publication From the Chronicles of the Institute, drawings from the years 1941-1942, was published by Posta.
Our team has digitized Vakhang Beridze's archives for the publication titled From the Chronicles of the Institute, drawings from the years 1941-1942 (published by Posta Press). The project was initiated by Gallery Nectar
