In light of the fact that Georgia no longer has a silk industry, researching and studying the country‘s sericultural past is of great significance. Thanks to the efforts and support of the Goethe-Zentrum Baku and our team at Dineba, the Museum was able to digitize its important collection of glass negatives and the archival material for the exhibition Casting an Echo: Architecture of Sericulture. Never-before-seen photographs constitute a precious resource through which to explore cultural, economic and social references related to Silk production in the South Caucasus.
The exhibition was organized at Goethe Institute, Georgia, in collaboration with the State Silk Museum from 19 November 2021 to 19 February, 2022.
The exhibition display developed for Casting an Echo: Architecture of Sericulture has been organized to allow various sections of the show to be rearranged onsite, making space for new assessments, thus questioning how physical engagements with the archives can interrogate, subvert, or open up the material to new forms of association.
