a spindleful. here. again. / Casting an Echo: Architecture of Sericulture was developed as part of the initiative The The Whole Life. Archives & Imaginaries, exhibition and congress at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (24.03-18.04.2022). “The Whole Life. Archives & Imaginaries” reflects on archives as places for counter-narratives. The artists explored actual archives, each using their own strategies and methods of artistic research. Their work resulted in eight installations throughout HKW in which they explore new perspectives on their holdings and contexts as well as new possibilities for encounters.
Installations by Bini Adamczak, Nathalie Anguezomo Mba Bikoro, Chto Delat, Tony Cokes, Charlotte Eifler & Clarissa Thieme, Assaf Gruber, Mobile Academy Berlin, Olaf Nicolai with Nina Akhvlediani. Lectures by and talks with Mieke Bal, Amanda Boetzkes, Nanna Bonde Thylstrup, Başak Ertür, Avery F. Gordon, Doreen Mende, Monika Rinck, Rasha Salti, Ines Schaber, Shela Sheikh, Cornelia Sollfrank, Oxana Timofeeva, Kathryn Yusoff among others. Performances by Salim Bayri, Chto Delat, Euripides Laskaridis, Paula Montecinos Oliva, Markus Öhrn. Screenings with films by Walter Heynowski and Gerhard Scheumann, Mario Marret, Yugantar among others.
For the installation a spindleful. here. again. / Casting an Echo: Architecture of Sericulture, Olaf Nicolai and Nina Akhvlediani united materials that have evolved since 2019 from the engagement with the Tbilisi State Silk Museum, its archives and local actors. These included photographs, microscope images, silk cocoons, textiles and butterflies.
In the framework of the installation the first two issues of SERI(a)—the State Silk Museum’s new publication series—were presented. They serve as a platform for the State Silk Museum’s various publishing efforts and are themselves a kind of archive for the most diversified documents on sericulture.
Our team at Dineba has digitized photographs and helped archive the glass plate negatives collection, which was made possible by the Goethe-Zentrum Baku and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. A first version of the installation was on view at Goethe Institut Georgien from November 2021 to February 2022.
